World Cup latest: USA tames England Lions in 0-0 draw

England 0-0 United States

  • England have still never beaten the USA at a World Cup — at their first encounter at the 1950 in Brazil, the US won 1-0.

  • The Three Lions needed to win this game to guarantee a spot in the last 16.

  • England have had 12 goalless draws at the World Cup, the most of any nation in the history of the World Cup

  • Colombian captain Énner Valencia has become the top scorer at this World Cup with his third goal in Qatar.

  • It also extended the 33-year-old veteran’s streak to scoring all six Ecuador goals at World Cups since the 2014 tournament.

  • The result eliminated host nation Qatar just five days after the start of its home World Cup that cost about €200 billion to prepare.

  • The draw gave both the Dutch and Ecuador one point apiece to move them to four points in Group A. It left Qatar with zero points after losing 3-1 to Senegal hours earlier.

  • Ecuador dominated much of the game and almost got a deserved winning goal when the Netherlands crossbar was rattled by a rising left-foot shot from Gonzalo Plata.

  • Ecuador plays Senegal on Tuesday, needing just a draw to advance, and the Netherlands will play Qatar.

  • Netherlands had its seven-game win streak in group-stage play at World Cups ended. The Dutch won their first three games in 2010 and 2014 then opened in Qatar by beating Senegal 2-0.

  • It came after Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was shown a straight red card Wales’ with just four minutes remaining.
  • The result leaves Wales with an uphill task to qualify from Group B.

Qatar 1-3 Senegal

  • Qatar, who became the first host nation in World Cup history to lose its first match, fall behind to Senegal.
  • Two goals on either side of halftime put the African team in charge of the match
  • Qatar pulled a goal back before Bamba Dieng sealed it for Senegal late on.

What happened at the World Cup on Thursday?

Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history as the first male player to score at five World Cups with his 65th-minute penalty against Ghana. Portugal won the game 3-2.

Richarlison came through for the “Seleção” scoring both goals for Brazil in a 2-0 win against Serbia. His second, an overhead kick into the top left corner, is already being touted as the best goal of the tournament.

Since competing as Serbia in 2010, the country has not advanced to the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

Monaco forward Breel Embolo scored the only goal of the game to defeat Cameroon — the country he was born in — in the morning match in Qatar on Thursday. Embolo kept his promise not to celebrate the goal, which ended up deciding the match in Switzerland’s favour, 1-0.

None of the five African teams at the Qatar World Cup won their first match in the group stage.

What are the key talking points so far?

Two major upsets marked the first round: first, Saudi Arabia achieved an astonishing result in their opening match against Argentina at Lusail Stadium, winning the game 1-2.

Then, it was Japan who blitzed Germany 1-2 as well, overturning the German advantage with two goals in eight minutes in what proved to be a high-tempo contest throughout.

German football association DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has called for an official statement from FIFA over action that will be taken if players wear One Love armbands at the World Cup.

Several World Cup teams have backed down and abandoned an anti-discrimination campaign aimed at host nation Qatar, in the fear they will receive yellow cards if they support it. One of the teams, Denmark, has backed Germany’s protest.
